This system comprises a Flexar FX-20 UHPLC with output routed to an Axion II TOF Mass Spectrometer.
The mass spectrometer uses a Time-Of-Flight (TOF) detector. TOF detectors accelerate ions entering the spectrometer with an equal kinetic energy before entering the flight tube. Once in the flight tube the different masses of the ions cause them to arrive at the detector at different times. This time is measured and converted into a m/z value allowing identification of the ion.
A TOF spectrometer is capable of very high spectra acquisition rates, independent of mass range, giving it an advantage in highspeed LC and LCxLC applications.
The TOF is also equipped with a Direct Sample Analysis attachment (seen on the bottom front of the TOF). This allows for direct ionisation and sample introduction into the mass spectrometer, without prior separation by HPLC.
In the photo on this page, the mass spectrometer is the large piece of equipment to the right of the Liquid Chromatography setup.
